2021 HAKOMI COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING LEVEL 1

(Section B - Starting May 2021)

Hakomi Comprehensive Training is taught in two levels. In Hakomi Comprehensive Training Level 1, you'll learn the basic principles and practices of Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychology. Whether you're a mental health practitioner, coach, counselor or body worker, this training will help you build innovative counseling and interpersonal skills that will increase your effectiveness with clients. Adding Hakomi’s somatic, experiential tools to your work will help you to go deeper with clients and discover the unseen root causes of their challenges.

For Whom

This training is open to psychotherapists and psychotherapy interns who want to learn Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychology in its entirety, as well as students of counseling and psychotherapy. It is also appropriate for coaches, clergy, body workers, health practitioners, educators, civic leaders and those interested in transitioning into the field of mental health.

Because our 2022 Level 2 training is likely to be in-person in the California Bay area, we will prioritize admission for this training to applicants from California, Nevada, and Arizona. That said, our Level 1 training will give you a solid grounding in the basic skills of Hakomi and hands-on experience with of the basic steps and stages of our therapeutic method.

Class Format

This training combines nine modules of online self-paced learning with nine live instructor-led online Zoom weekends from May through February (with August off). Each month, you'll receive 90 minutes of self-paced learning materials two weeks before your live Zoom class, and you'll complete those materials at your own pace before each live class begins. This class pre-work will include video talks, slide shows, audio files, demo sessions and/or reading. Live classes will focus on experiential learning, supervised practice, Q&A and live demonstrations of Hakomi. You'll also join a practice partnership or practice group that meets once monthly between monthly class sessions to practice the skills you learn in the training.

What You Will Learn

In Hakomi Comprehensive Training Level 1, you'll learn through short talks, unique skill-based experiential exercises, supervised practice, demonstrations and assigned readings. You'll participate in regular supervised practice and receive supportive feedback by dedicated and knowledgeable teaching assistants. This feedback will provide opportunities to celebrate what's working, refine what needs attention, and to evolve personal edges that may be limiting your success. Our learning environment is relaxed and participatory with numerous opportunities to practice new skills with other group members, both in and out of class.

In this hands-on, experiential training, you'll learn how to:

  • Energize and strengthen your work using Hakomi's inspiring principles of nonviolence, organicity, mind-body holism and unity
  • Use mindfulness to identify and transform hidden core beliefs driving self-defeating behavior
  • Gain greater self-awareness by mindfully studying your own limiting reactive patterns
  • Work from a compassionate, nonjudgmental state that helps clients feel safer and go deeper
  • Apply unique and innovative methods for melting client resistance and overcoming impasses in your work

Dates
Online class materials will be released two weeks before each class, i.e., 5/7/21 for the May class, 6/4/21 for the June class, etc.

She's a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT 83806), a Registered Addictions Specialist (M0412011012), and a Certified Hakomi Therapist and Trainer with 30 years of experience consulting, teaching and working in the healing arts. Julie leads trainings for health professionals in Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychology, attachment psychotherapy and other special topics in the United States, Australia, Canada, Israel and New Zealand. Bringing together years of study and professional experience in the fields of anthropology, contemplative psychology, addictions, attachment theory, massage therapy, Buddhism, and poetry, Julie has developed an archetype-based personal growth method--The Mythic Body; a somatic approach to creative writing--Embodied Writing™; and co-developed the workshop Waking Up from the Family Trance. Julie serves as adjunct faculty at John F. Kennedy University, has taught in the California Institute of Integral Studies Certificate Program in Mindfulness and Compassion in Psychotherapy, and has presented at numerous professional conferences including the American Massage Therapy Association, the Hakomi Institute International Conference, and the U.S. Association of Body Psychotherapy. In 2011, she published "Loosening the Grip of Addiction: A Mindful Recovery" in The Therapist. A practitioner of meditation for over 35 years, Julie's teaching integrates a strong contemplative approach with cutting-edge research in neuroscience and human relationships. In addition, she has studied with master poets from all over the United States and has been journaling and writing poetry since she was eleven years old. These varied studies extend her range of teaching beyond psychotherapy to mindfulness and meditation, contemplative and creative writing, mindful recovery and embodiment. Julie maintains a private practice in Santa Cruz, offering somatic psychotherapy and addictions counseling to individuals, couples, adolescents and families.

Please note: At least two additional Hakomi faculty members will assist Julie in teaching this training. We will post their bios as soon as we've confirmed their participation in the training.
